Burnaby South Secondary hosted a student health week in November 2016 that focused on encouraging good sleep. We wanted run an event in the Rebels Makerspace that helped students achieve good sleep. Using donated fabric, lavender seeds and lavender water, students sewed their own lavender sachets. Lavender was chosen because it’s been studied for its effect on reducing anxiety and insomnia. The event was truly interdisciplinary – combining textiles, science, and health education in the Makerspace – and remains our most well-attended. Over 60 sachets were made on the day with many more made during Makerspace open house sessions.
