Our aim for this event was to inspire students to “make” in the digital world. We chose to use the Green Screen because it allowed students to potentially make big-budget, Hollywood special effects with nothing more than an app and a evenly lit piece of fabric. We ordered a green screen kit from Amazon, installed a green screen app from iTunes onto an iPad, and downloaded interesting backdrops we found online. On the day of our event, we had students produce photos of them sitting in front of a hobbit house from Lord of the Rings, coming out of a warp pipe from the world of Super Mario, and flying through the atmosphere of an alien world. Participants were emailed a copy of what they created. Since this workshop, countless groups of students have used the green screen for both personal and academic projects.
