3D printing – otherwise known as additive manufacturing – is traditionally representative of the type of prototyping done in makerspaces. At its most basic, 3D printing is sort of like having a hot glue gun mounted on a machine that moves in all three dimensions while gradually laying out one layer of glue (ie. material) on top of the previous layer. In this workshop, we led students through the entire process of 3D printing an object: from finding and downloading an object file from Thingiverse (the world’s largest repository of 3D files) to preparing the object file for printing to finally printing the object on our Robo 3D.
