With the Christmas season right around the corner, we wanted to help students create useful stocking stuffers by upcycling, which is the process of reusing discarded objects or materials in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. We focused on gift cards because they are plentiful and are regularly discarded after they’ve been used up. Also, gift cards tend to change hands quite often during the holiday season. We found a short instructional video for the gift card stands online, created our own templates for students to use, and had students easily cranking out smartphone stands during lunch hour. The event’s success lends itself to its low barrier of entry and the fact that fire is employed, which is always popular among students (and adults too).
