In high school, Kent took the required Grade 8 courses in textiles and woodworking and made a gym sack (for which he got a C+ and used until he got married) and a poorly drawn, Batman-shaped box (which he lost). In the Rebels Makerspace, Kent has researched, made and tested every single creation, but his strength lies in making through computer aided design, 3D printing, Cricut, and CNC. He’s interested in using a variety of media whether it be textiles or wood or even music, and when he gets the time (and money) in the future, he wants to learn to make a pair of leather shoes professionally, to dj/produce music so he can release a Billboard top 10 album, and to roast coffee for his future hipster cafe (a cafe that will also feature his handmade shoes and chart topping music).

For Kathleen, the Rebel Makerspace is a wonderful space to tinker and explore for fun, but it is also a valuable resource for supporting student learning through collaboration with classroom teachers.   She is interested in all kinds of makerspace initiatives, be they low tech, high tech or no tech projects.  She finds it fun and cool to transform simple materials or upcycling used things into practical and useful items.  Making things with her hands has always been something that Kathleen enjoys doing.  From cooking a meal to making BBQ pork buns, to knitting dish clothes or crocheting afghans, it is a rewarding and satisfying experience to see the finished product!  She is looking forward to honing these skills and is also keen on trying new ideas!   This summer, her goal is to learn to sew her own dress and be more proficient in knitting and crocheting.  Before becoming a teacher-librarian, Kathleen briefly dreamt about a career as a cabinet maker, creating masterpieces for herself and others to enjoy! ​

Caroline’s current motto is “find joy in the journey”. She finds joy in music and art, travel and photography, baking and reading. If she could have any superpower it would be teleportation so she could travel anywhere in the world any time she likes. When she’s home you might catch her doodling, working on charcoal drawings or oil paintings. Otherwise, you will likely see her snapping photos. In the last 8 years, she has taken (no kidding) over 40,000 pictures here and away. In the future, Caroline would like to take up glass blowing or maybe learn how to play the fiddle. As a kid, she learned to build things with her Dad and bake with her Mom. Her favourite items to bake are dark chocolate raspberry banana bread and coconut macaroons. Her family refers to the knack for assembling, designing and fixing things as the “MacGyver gene”. Caroline looks forward to finding fun ways to put that to use tinkering, creating and crafting in our Library Makerspace.

When she was a young child, Stephanie liked to “make” crawdads fight to the death on the bridge over Fanno Creek in her Portland, Oregon backyard. (After immigrating to Canada, she became much more classy.) In her more skilled moments, Stephanie fiddled with Fimo©, worked a bead loom, made friendship bracelets, and learned to crochet from the only other left-handed maker she knew (her mom). In a brief health-conscious period of her teen years, she was reportedly the only 17-year-old to grow and harvest her own bean sprouts. Back in the day, Stephanie made memories as a small town newspaper reporter. For 14 years she made students suffer through Lord of the Flies, but kept it real with stop motion film-making. After making two cute babies, she went the distance and made their baby food too. Today she makes words dance in podcasts, poetry, and her daily profile status. She is pleased to be a Teacher Librarian here to make things with you.

Dennis’ Maker Qualities

Lisa secretly loved creating wonderful items since she was young. Growing up with trades people and gardeners there was always ideas and ways to make things and get things done yourself.  Afraid to share her creations with friends or in school she started out learning how to cross-stitch by her mom around 10 years old; her grandmother showed her how to knit and sewing. But, during her time in high school, Lisa found a little outlet by joining ‘stage crew.’ This is where she helped build sets and items for the major high school performances.  Lisa is grateful for her wonderful art teacher who not only spark the love of drawing and painting but provided opportunities to use different materials to be creative like carving out of soap. It wasn’t until the end of university that Lisa found knitting and crocheting a source of fun, creativity and relaxation. With crazy moments of baking and trying new ideas to help with life’s stresses. Lisa is overjoyed to be part of makerspace. Lisa is happy to share with the world her skills and tips for creativity. “There is so much possibility to be creative and when we do it, we learn, and when we repeat, we strength ourselves.” Come and join in.

Jo has loved to craft and create all her life. She doodles, makes jewellery, colours and paints, and loves to upcycle things that normally would have been thrown out. She drinks way too much tea, plays way too many video games, and nerds out way too often. She’d like to learn how to use her telescope to take her own pictures of the moon, how to use watercolours to paint really cool space scenery artwork, and how to stop hoarding so many potential craft supplies.
